Nancy Troy (Loretta Young) and her mystery-author husband, Jeff (Brian Aherne), move into a dark basement apartment in New York City’s Greenwich Village, in hopes of stirring up writing inspiration. When their neighbors begin acting oddly and one of them turns up dead, Nancy and Jeff must uncover a murder mystery in their own building, with a number of suspects lurking about, including the creepy Mrs. Devoe (Gale Sondergaard).
