A group of oppressed villagers ask a merchant skipper, (John Wayne), to guide their Chinese ferry to Hong Kong and freedom, but the skipper, a prisoner of the Chinese authorities, must first be sprung from captivity before he can ferry the stolen paddleship. Navigating the treacherous waters, the captain and his strange crew have a gun boat and a destroyer hot on their heels.
